Oliver Half Race Report by Tim
Race Day
Heavy rain. Temperature about 8 degrees. Already soaked in transition before the start. Covered my race bag with my bike rainwear as I’d rather have dry gear than a dry body. No room to lay out my transition gear as I am accustomed. Need to work on transitioning from a bag.
Swim
I felt quite calm before the swim; I left my training group and stood alone. HR was quite normal – no HR monitor. Need to get HR monitor mended. Seeded myself in the middle of the pack – one rank behind the front starters. Very heavy traffic for two-thirds of the first leg. I had to stop twice due to heavy kicking. Found clear water and was able to get into a rhythm, then caught up with more traffic !! Kept a good straight line to the first buoy. By the first buoy I was beginning to overtake swimmers, cut past the buoy on the inside and took direct line to the second buoy, traffic was thinner and I was able to work on glide and my weak left-arm catch & pull. Moving through slower 2nd wave swimmers and the occasional 1st. wave.
I walked through the first turnaround, there was still some traffic on the second loop, but I got into the swing and was passing swimmers quite easily. Second loop went past very quickly.
Walked up the ramp and into transition to avoid stressing my calf.
Race gear was soaked. Forgot to put on GPS – as it was deep inside my bag – probably a good thing as it’s not waterproof.
Bike
Went out slowly, hydrated with water only and settled in – quite comfortable with being passed !! Very soon after I started I fell down a major pothole, and the magnet flew off my front wheel – so I had no readings on my computer – probably a combination of both the wet and the lost magnet. Anyway, I did the race not knowing elapsed time, distance or cadence – so just raced by perceived effort – important to train on PE as well as HR and wattage. After about 15 minutes I picked up the pace and began to pass other cyclists. I spent the entire three hours on the ‘bars with the exception of some of the turns and the hill, so was comfortable with the new bike setup.
I was relying on CarboPro for food – using one bottle for concentrate and replenishing water at each aid station. Tri-It had to return their liquid Carbo-Pro as it was “stale-dated” and didn’t get replacement – and I couldn’t find any in Penticton, so made do with Hammer Gel – which I diluted because it was so viscous. But I didn’t dilute it enough so it was very hard to get it to flow from the water bottle. Ensure I get ample supply of Carbo-Pro before IMC. I think that nutrition went well enough as I consumed the planned amount – I just wasn’t sure of timing and amounts.
From perceived effort, I think I was strong for the first 70/80 km and even had I been tracking power, I would have ridden with the same effort. However, lack of race-conditioning showed in the last 20 km or so, as I felt tired and began to get passed by others. Work on strength and endurance … surprise !!
Back in T2, the rain had stopped but everything was totally soaked. Must ensure I have a good supply of plastic bags just in case. Changed into compression socks and my normal running shoes (not the Newtons which emphasize forefoot running and consequently emphasize the push-off, which is the muscle I’ve damaged). I ran about 300 meters out of transition, but I could feel my calf pulling – so stopped and DNF’d on the spot.
Conclusions:
Work on Bike endurance and bike/run brick.
Work on running endurance.
Work with perceived effort to ensure I can continue to race when technology fails.
Ensure practice for transition out of a bag – with waterproofing as necessary.
Get HR monitor fixed.
Get adequate supply of Carbo-Pro.

Oliver Half Race Report by Isabelle
“The day started out with a bit of a disappointment as it was pouring rain on the way from Penticton to Oliver...but as soon as I got to Oliver and saw all the athletes walking in the rain, I could feel the excitement coming back and figured I’d been training hard enough and long enough for this so this was not a day to just roll over and sleep in!!! So I went to set up my transition area in the rain...with a smile!
Swim start – my heart was racing....but as soon as I heard the familiar sound I went and I was on fire! I was so excited for some reason! I couldn’t stop singing in the water. I felt smooth and relaxed and everything was going fine! On the way back after about 1.5km, I started wondering if they’d let me do a few more swim loops and cut down the run...he he...I finished in 39 minutes and was proud of myself! The stripping of the wetsuit was so much fun (I have to admit I couldn’t wait to try it...ha ha).
I went to transition and all my stuff was soaked. I was having a hard time leaving the comfort of the transition area but then a guy next to me told me it was probably time to go...so I went...ha ha...and was on fire again! I was riding, passing people, eating my salted potatoes, cheerios, pretzels, fig newtons....and thinking :”This is awesome, I get to eat all the food I’ve been avoiding for the last months!!” But at 63km, I started feeling tired....I was going super slow and couldn’t speed up my legs for some reason....so I popped a few potatoes in my mouth and this girl passed me and said: “Go 661!!!!” and I went again....I finished the 93km ride in 3:39 which is awesome for me! I was surprised and happy!!!!!!! The second transition was SO slow...cause you know how I love running...ha ha...believe it or not, I was in transition for a little over 7 minutes!!!!! But then I heard Tom say” Go Isabelle, you’re almost done!”....and the first pro woman was crossing the finish line at the same time so I thought I should hurry up if I didn’t want to finish my run alone....so I went....The run was two loops and I did not have the stiff legs I was expecting to have. I felt good and decided to do 10-1...and it worked! I ran steady and walked fast when walking for the 1 minutes...and was looking at the beautiful scenery! When I got to the turn around point I was surprised at the pace I was keeping and pretty happy with myself! My left foot was hurting as I had tied my shoe too tight but I was scared to stop...and then at the 18km mark I realized I was going to finish this thing and unless I wanted a grim on my face at the finish line, I better fix my shoe so I bent down and almost got stuck there....wow I thought! This really is something! This guy passed by me and encouraged me so I went....all proud of myself!!! As I got to the turn around point I saw that many of the athletes which I thought were in front of me were actually behind me by one loop and started encouraging people and feeling so proud...I can’t describe it! I could see the arch and people were clapping and I just wanted to dance!!! I did it Todd! Thanks to you, thanks to Tom’s patience and thanks to my body!!!!!!!! I LOVED it! And now the ironman dream is so much closer......I am addicted!!!! You are the best coach!!!!
When I crossed the finish line, the commentator said:” Here we have a very happy athlete....”....ha ha...and it made me laugh!!!!
My final time: 7:11:17 – no world record but certainly a personal record!!! And really, if I keep that pace and go a little faster in transition, maybe I could qualify for Hawaii...ha ha!!!!! I just want to kiss every ironman’s feet now that I understand half of what they feel on D-day!!! So to anyone who is thinking of doing a half or a full: GO FOR IT!!! There is no feeling like this one!!!! “

Shane's Wildflower Report
Hello all,
As many of you know and others may not, I have been gearing up for the World Age Group Championships in the triathlon on June 7 of this year and I wanted to take this opportunity to update you all on a great race I had over the weekend in California. The race was called the Wildflower triathlon and it consisted of 3 races (Long Course, Off Road Triathlon and the Olympic Distance Triathlon) and there were over 7000 athletes competing over the weekend. Prior to going to the race it was told to me that this was one of the hardest courses in the United States for the triathlon.
I competed in the Olympic Distance Triathlon, which happened on Sunday May 4. The weather was almost perfect for racing, with the temperatures nearing the +25C by the time I ended my race. For those of you who do not know the distances, it consisted of 1500m swim, a 40K bike, and a 10K run. Now, onto the race, I had a little trouble in the swim but still finished in a fast time of 22:14. The bike was very hilly but I had a lot of fun on the course, passing lots of people going up the hills and many more going down the other side. The bike was a lot of fun but very hard. I finished in a time of 1:18:28. Then onto the run. I felt great coming out of transition and felt pretty good throughout the run. The run, just like the bike was very hilly, and it climbed for 8K and then flattened out at the top for a couple 100 metres and then a mile down a hill to the finish. I finished the run in a time of 42:18 and set a new personal best in the 10K. My overall time was 2:28:41. I felt great in the race and when I looked at the results I was even more excited about Worlds coming in just over a month. I finished 17th in my age group out of 250 athletes and finished 103rd overall out of 2400 athletes in the Olympic Distance Race.
So, I am into my final weeks of training before the big race and after the race on the weekend, I am really looking forward to Worlds. Thank you all for your support and I look forward to telling you all about my big race in June. In case any of you are in the Vancouver area on the 7th of June, the race is taking place in Stanley Park.

Rob's Wildflower (Half Ironman) Race report
During the swim I initially thought "okay, let's just focus on rolling along, find someone to follow." And after a while I thought "this guy's going slow" and I looked up and I was in a group that looked like it was quite a ways back from whoever was at the front. And then twice I went off course and looked up and giggled again and thought "I need to practice this open swim thing a bit." Every now and again I'd just go on my own and push harder, but I think I kept ending up behind the same guy because I kept wandering.
During the bike I focused on not going too hard. My HR was 172 when I jumped on my bike, so I just tried to slow things down. After the first hill I kept smiling and singing ABBA "take it easy, take it nice and slow..." keeping my HR in the low 160's. Then my bottle rack started to fall apart. So I dumped those water bottles off and just put my head down and pedaled. I didn't know where the course went or how long it was, just that there was a hard hill somewhere along the way. I kept smiling about that and how I was just there to pedal, never mind what the course was. During the big hill it just kept going and I was slaving away wondering when it was going to end. A guy passed me and said "keep it going, you're living the dream buddy!" and I just about started to cry. Then it was over and I went sailing down the hill, loving how fast my bike was. At about 2:30 my mind started to wander and I found myself thinking "okay, time for this damn thing to end." I found I couldn't eat any more gel.
I tried a banana at the start of the run but it was too sweet as well. The run started as a sort of shuffle. But I just kept plugging away and started to feel pretty good. After mile 3 I started to cramp up, and one hill was just too steep. So I walked up the end of it, and my stomach started to really hurt. I could feel I was bloated. Running down the hill was really painful. I went through an aid station and tried to drink some gatorade but couldn't. A few miles of burping and farting and alternating walking and running, and then I could feel my energy just slipping away and I could feel I was dehydrating and needed to get some food in me. I started to get a bit disoriented and at the aid station at mile 10 I mixed some gatorade with water and had that. Started to feel slightly better and ran to the finish. I felt sick and really emotional as I ran the last bit, and I kept thinking "just hold it together till the finish line." And I did, and when I crossed the finish line I sort of half sobbed and half laughed and thought "I feel like s**t."
I've had so many thoughts about the race. How it relates to so many things in my life. How triathlon's been such a part of my career in an odd way. How I've looked at that fridge magnet that says "in 2008 I will race Wildflower" every morning when I get my cereal.
And I raced it.

2008 Boston Marathan Race Report by Sue
As the saying goes: I'll be back!" Can you believe I was less than one second off per mile! Manana! Another reason to try again. It was a great race and I just felt terrific throughout. I had no idea how I was doing along the way other than from my HR which I kept steady around 146-7. I kept thinking not to blow it by going out too hard before "the hills". If you read the reports from Lance Armstrong you know the crowds were huge lining the small roads so I figure I did pretty well squeezing my way forward as the race progressed. It is very unlike NYNY that way: you can not run your own race as you are always thinking about your next move up the road around people or under their elbows. As I went in at 13190 and came out at 7045( or near that) that was quite a few people to move past politely. The aid stations came up so quickly as you could never see then until you were on them due to the crowds pushing into the roadway. I never miss a drink station so that meant quick veering to grab a cup to drink or dunk on my head. It got very hot as the day went on - but fine for me. Others got very burnt - like Karen. the noise grew and grew along the way and I don't know if it peaked passing the Wellesley screaming women or towards the end along Commonwealth where the crowds got thicker and thicker. I know I really had little time along the way to think about my cues that you had written me. There is nothing boring about running Boston. It really does just envelope you and carry you for a ride. It was a blast. I do recommend you try it. Thanks Coach.

Spring Trio Results
The spring Trio dad 3 events 5, 10, and 15 Km run events. In the 10 Km we saw Sue getting ready for Boston with a last pacing day where she ran 44:40 1st in Age group and 5th woman overall.. Louise was also racing and she had an improved run time of 43:50 good enough for 1st in Age group and 3rd woman overall. John was back in the game taking part in the 10 km and ran a 56:06. Janette was very happy with her day and she continues to improve with each 10 KM. This time she broke 1 hour and crossed in 59:02.
In the 15Km we had Lisa and Kevin running. Kevin was not feeling well so he back off the pace and used the race as a training day. He finished in 1:13. That is a very good time for taking it easy. Lisa felt strong from start to finish and beat her target time and finished in 1:17 to be 2nd in her Age group and 5th woman overall.
Great runs for all on such a beautiful April Sunday!!

Mount Royal Sprint
The MRC sprint tri was held last weekend and we had Maddie and Pete racing. Both had good days. Maddie showed that her swim has improved much this year being 6th overall and with a steady bike and strong run she place 15, and 2nd female overall. Pete also showed that his fitness is strong with a steady swim and very strong bike (3rd overall). He stopped after the bike as he is letting his calf heal. Good results!!
IronMan Arizona
On the weekend Darryl took part in his 3rd IronMan event. The weather was hot and windy. Not Calgary hot, but Arizona hot. For a race in April the temperature was in the 30’s. The swim went well 1:03. Once on the bike Darryl stuck to his race plan. His nutrition and pacing worked great bringing him back to T2 with a time of 5:27. Once on the run is where the heat really became a factor. Aiming to hold his race pace, Darryl pushed as hard as he could and finished with a 3:52 marathon for a total of 10:29. I watched him finish on the web and he had absolutely nothing left as he sprinted across the finish line and fell in the arms of the catchers. Very inspiring.
Lyndsey was also using this race as a training day and she exited the lake just ahead of Darryl in 1:02. She did half of the bike and then called it a day. What a great way to get a long swim and bike in.

Ski to Sea
On April 6 Jackie took part in the very challenging Ski to Sea race in Kelowna. This is quite a challenging race that consists of 6 legs that adds up to 95 Km. The order of completion are: alpine skiing, nordic skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, running, and canoeing/kayaking. The race is a relay and all team members are required to help bring the canoe equipment across the finish line. Wow, sound like a fun day! Congrats of being part of such a great event.

IceBreaker 10Km
Icebreaker 10 Km took place last Sunday on a beautiful day for a run. We were very lucky not to have the snow that I see today as I type this. Wow, Calgary weather never ceases to amaze me.
The big story of the day was Maddie. She was running in he 1st 10 Km of the year. Before the run I asked her what she wanted to run. She told me 41-42min. Her last year's time was 46. I said Ok and we we off. Strong pace from the start and she seemed to be in good form. At the 1 km mark we were 3:46. Very quick. We hung on to a solid pace up until the 5 Km mark where we ran into Lyndsey. She was having a good day while feeling the hard workouts from the week in her legs. Together all 3 of us ran to the finish in a PR for Maddie of 41:36. Yes she was happy!!!
Just ahead of us Corey finished in 40:59 who was also happy with his run. He passed up going up the hill and then we lost sight of him. Good job Corey.
Unknowingly we were helping pace Tim as well. He could see us in the distance for most of the race and he finished in 42:56. A good time considering he has been sick all week.
Mariano and Rose also got some Wildflower training in as well and ran the 10 Km in 53:35. We need more of these 10 Km races so Mariano can have more runs.... :)
After the race the brunch was amazing! Very delicious food Mmmm! Definitely mark this race on your calender for next year.
Next races: Spring trio 10, 15 km and MRC sprint triathlon on the weekend!! Good Luck!
Very quick. St Pats 10 Km
Well St Pats 10 km has come and gone for another year. When I arrived at the start I was ready for -5 or so weather. I should have checked the TV. With the windchill it felt about -15 or colder. I was getting very cold during my shortened warmup. I decided to head back to my car and see what clothes I could find to put on. I found an extra toque and the long sleeve shirt from the race package. After putting these on I headed into the red and white building to warm up. Much better!!!
Ok, so I wanted to run with Maddie for her 5 Km run but the 5 Km race started 5 min behind the 10 Km so that was not going to happen today. I decided to have a strong 10 Km instead. It has been quite a few years since I have done this. The winds were strong at times and the streets were mostly covered in snow which made the footing a bit tricky. I was being careful with my footing and I did not want to fall today. The pace at the front was very quick. Too quick for me but I decided to push as hard as I could. I briefly checked my HR and the number was in the 180's. I thought this is going to be a long race at that number. I soldiered on and pushed when I could and hung on when I needed to. I did the best I could and I was very happy to see that I would break 40 min. Official time 39:47. Very happy to cross the line.
There were many other No Limits athletes running today:
Rob ran very well at 42:55
Shane was Happy with 43:11
Kevin was also happy with 44:46
Louise is feeling her fitness improving at 44:55
Elaine looked very strong at 45:29
Sue running in her 1st winter race at 46:12
Rose felt ill with the help of Darryl :) at 51:53
Peter was very happy at 52:16
Mary keeps getting PRs. new 10 km at 52:32
Phoenix finished well at 52:56
Jackie happy at 53:39
Lisa was very happy to cross the finish safely at 53:55
We also saw 2 athletes run in the 5 Km
Maddie came in 7th overall and 3rd in under 20 at 22:46
Tim finished right behind her at 22:54 for a 1st in his Age group.
There was another St Pats 10 Km running at the same time but different course. Janice took part in this one and ran 53:33. Well done.
It sure was fun to be out racing again. This was just a tune up race to see where everyone is. So far all signs look good! Next race is Lyndsey in AZ again and then the Icebreaker!
Happy Easter everyone!

Desert Classic Duathlon
Lyndsey competed in the desert Duathlon over the weekend in Arizona. Some big names were there like Simon Whitfield, Paul Tichler and Joanna Zieger. Lyndsey won her age group, was 1st over all age group lady and was only 1 min behind Joanna Zieger (pro) to finish 2nd overall (pro + age group). These are unofficial results and very exciting! Remember that Joanna Zieger came in 4th at the Sydney Olympics!
Congrats Lyndsey!!!! Great job.

Half Marathons this weekend
This weekend we have 2 half marathons. The hypothermic half in calgary hopefully will not live up to its name. Last week was very cold and only a brave few took to the paths. Mary, Brad and Anthony will be tackling this race. Rumor has it that Rose may be seen at the start.
The other race that should be warmer is in Vancouver. First half Marathon. Elaine and Michele will be running that event.
Good luck to all runners, and stay warm!!! :)

Last chance Half
Last Chance Half
Last weekend was the last chance half marathon in Calgary. Elaine was using this race as a last tune up for Vegas Marathon. Legs were a bit tired but end result was very good. Elaine finished in a time of 1:36, good enough for 3rd in her AG, 11th female and 50th overall. Vegas in 2 weeks!
John, wanted to try this race as it was his first half. He was very pleased to run that far and finished in a time of 2:11
Other finishers included Corey in a time of 1:33 (close Corey) and Rose in a time of 2:33.
Congrats to all who ran!

Calgary Tri Club Challenge
Tony Smith of UCTC writes:
I've had a fun idea kicking around in my head for while which I'd like to share with you all. I've often thought it would be great to bring the various Calgary Tri Clubs together for a fun event in the off season. This event would be called "Calgary Tri Club Challenge", here's how I see it working.
Your athletes will complete a 1500m swim time trial at your facility (or independently) anytime between now and Nov 20. You will send me, by email, your athlete names (first name only will suffice) and time for the 1500m.
Participants from all clubs will then meet at Edworthy Park (north side parking lot) on Sunday, Nov 25 at 10am for a 5km run time trial on the pathway heading East, out and back. Total time will be recorded.
I will collect all results and add the 1500m swim time to the 5k run time for an overall placing. I will post combined swim and run results on our club website. No entry fee and no prizing (unless anyone wants to donate prizing for the event).
Everyone will be welcome, non club members will also be invited to race as "independents".
I see this as a great opportunity to organize a fun event and bring everyone together. A first amongst Calgary tri Clubs in our city !
The UCTC will be participating for sure and I'd like to encourage you to join us. Full details will be posted on our club message board at www.facebook.com soon. I will copy you with the info, if you're interested please "reply all" to this email and let us know. Coaches are also encouraged to race, let's have some fun with this !
Tony.

New York Marathon
The New York marathon was held on Sunday. The internet is great as I was able to watch the start (hit my watch) and follow the progress of Sue as she clicked off the miles. Going into the race Sue was a bit hesitate as to what the day would bring. As I followed her progress, I saw that she was having a great day! This was her last race in New York in her current age group. She did awesome finishing in a time of 3:33. This was good enough to place 6th in her Age (55 - 59) group. This is the New York Marathon!!! Very well done Sue!
Races last weekend
Last weekend we saw quite a few races happening. 1st was in Banff with the Winterstart.
Maddie was trying to repeat her Age group win from last year. She was feeling under the weather all week and managed to push through a tough night to once again win. Congrats Maddie on a good race and not feeling 100%.
Michele was also running in Banff as a fun race, and a chance to have a short training race for Vegas. She had a great time in Banff and enjoyed the evening run. Kevin decided to try this race as well. He felt good from start to finish and was happy with 12th in his Age group.
Back in Calgary on a cold and snowy Sunday we had quite a few challenge the Jingle Bell 10Km run. Shane was close to the front with a time of 44:38, Brad was enjoying his day with a sub 50 min clocking, Mary was very happy to finish sub 60 in her 1st ever 10 km, Janette took off 15 mins from her last 10 km and Isabelle was at first disappointed with her run but after looking at the conditions (very snowy and icy) was pleased with her day.
Great job to all for getting out and testing the elements and your Fall training. Next race is the Last Chance Marathon next weekend.

Art a la Carte
Art a la Carte
This past weekend we had a 10 mile and 10 km race, Art a la Carte. Elaine showed she is getting ready for Vegas with a very strong 1:12. This put her 8th overall and 2nd in Age Group.
Kevin and Lisa were also racing. They took part in the 10 Km. Kevin showed how much he loves to run with a 47:09 (3rd overall). Lisa, not too far behind ran a 55:04 (15 overall). Both were pleased with their day.
Great job to all the racers. Next race is Jingle Bell 10 KM and Banff Winterstart.

EMS running race
EMS 5 and 10 Km
The EMS race took place on Oct 12. I do not have the results from that race. If anyone would like to email them that would be awesome.
Shane and Maddie both took part in the 5km event. Both had good runs. Maddie was coming off a 2nd place finish at the cities x-country event the following day. Here she was able to stay in front of Shane and finish very high. 2nd???? Shane had a great race and he was focused on keeping a close eye on Maddie and not let her get too far ahead.
Isabelle, Janette and John were all running in the 10 km event. Isabelle and Janette both enjoyed the run and were pleased with the race. John pushed through feeling not so great from the flu and had fun and the race. All 3 are setting their sights on the Jingle Bell run 10km coming up very quickly.

Finer Details of Front Crawl Swim Clinic
I am once again offering my Swim Clinic The Finer Details of Front Crawl on Oct 21 at Tri-It. This is a 2 part class. Part 1 is a 2.5 hour lecture on proper technique of front crawl. Part 2 is your chance to take what you learned in the class to the pool and be video taped below and above water by Ken Olson of Race-Tec Systems Inc.
This is a very good refresher for everyone to brush up on their stroke. Each time I review the class I get a better handle of what I should be doing and my stroke always feels better.
I know that some of you have already taken the course and some will be video taped at other classes so I am offering a chance to take just part 1 or part 2 if desired.
The cost for the whole day is $150 (includes DVD) or
$180 (includes DVD + feedback from Ken)
The cost for part 1 or part 2 will be $75.
If the additional feedback option is chosen cost is $90.
I hope everyone is enjoying the Fall colors and the start of their Base building for 2008!
